Sustainable Window Restoration for A-Listed Castle in Edinburgh
Andy and Anna bought A-listed Monkton House near Edinburgh after falling in love with it, and they’re only the seventh owners in more than five centuries. Their dream is to make the castle as eco-friendly as possible while keeping its unique character, including restoring the old sash and casement windows.
Many are original oak windows and ‘no two windows are the same’. The sash and case windows have been refurbished or manufactured, in keeping with Eco Sash & Case’s mission to offer a more sustainable, eco-friendly window service for historic properties.
“Because we run weddings and events, Eco Sash work round our guests, in between bookings,” says Anna. “They mostly operate here but sometimes take the windows away to their workshop in Edinburgh to be rebuilt.
“They’ve been very good at advising us. Eco Sash have restored the windows very carefully, and made such a lovely job of finishing and repainting them. The heat retention has improved and guests are finding the rooms noticeably more cosy!”
Manufacturing Wooden Windows for Silverburn Flaxmill in Fife
Eco Sash has refurbished and manufactured 30 casement windows at Silverburn Flaxmill near Leven in Fife for FEAT, a mental health employability charity.
This is an ambitious £10 million project to restore Silverburn Park’s B-listed, brick-built former flax mill built in the 1850’s.
The new visitor attraction includes the Cottage Window Café, award-winning campsite, backpackers’ hostel, artist studios, a shop and community-use space. Silverburn Park also hosts events including two annual music festivals which attracted more than 1000 revellers and over 20 artists.
Refurbished Wooden Windows for Boutique Hotel in East Lothian
Eco Sash & Case has fully refurbished 72 sash and case windows for the former Duck’s Inn in Aberlady in East Lothian.
The hotel was built in 1638 and has become popular with golfers, tourists and locals over the last three decades.
The Duck’s Inn previously had 23 rooms, a 2AA rosette restaurant and a bar and bistro. The boutique hotel reopened as The Leddie in summer 2024.
The hotel, which has been fully refurbished to a very high standard, now has 27 luxury bedrooms, a cosy bar and a restaurant offering delicious Scottish food.
