Getting Your Sash Windows Ready for Winter

Winter is when sash windows have to work hardest, keeping heat in, draughts out, and standing up to cold, wet weather. A bit of preparation in autumn can make a real difference to comfort and energy bills once the temperature drops. Here’s how to get ready.

1. Check and Refresh Draught-Proofing

Draught-proofing strips naturally wear down over time, and worn seals are one of the biggest causes of cold, draughty rooms.

What to do:

  • Run your hand around the sash edges and meeting rail on a cold day to check for cold air getting through
  • Look at existing brush for signs of compression, gaps, or wear.

2. Inspect and Test Sash Cords and Mechanisms

A sash that doesn’t close fully is a direct route for cold air, so it’s worth confirming everything moves and seals as it should.

What to do:

  • Open and close each sash fully, checking it seats properly against the frame at the top and bottom
  • Listen and feel for sticking, which can indicate paint buildup.

3. Check Putty and Glazing

Cracked or missing putty is a common, often overlooked source of both draughts and moisture ingress.

What to do:

  • Inspect the putty around each pane for cracks, gaps, or areas where it’s come away from the frame
  • Repair or replace damaged putty before wet weather arrives, since moisture getting behind cracked putty over winter can lead to bigger issues in the frame
  • If you have double glazing, check for any early signs of condensation between panes, which indicates a seal issue worth addressing

4. Look at External Paintwork

Paint is your timber frame’s main defence against the moisture that comes with winter weather.

What to do:

  • Check for peeling, cracking, or bare patches on the external frame, particularly on sills and lower rails where water tends to collect

5. Consider Extra Layers of Protection

If you want additional warmth without altering your original windows, a few low-effort additions can help:

  • Heavy curtains or thermal linings, closed at night to add an extra layer of insulation
  • Original shutters, if your property has them, these were designed for exactly this purpose
  • Secondary glazing, a more permanent option for consistently cold rooms

Getting Ahead of Winter

If you’re noticing significant draughts despite draught-proofing, visible rot, or sashes that won’t close properly, these are worth having them checked. A little maintenance now goes a long way toward keeping your home comfortable and your energy bills in check once the cold really sets in.
