Located in Edinburgh’s historic New Town, Dundonald Street forms part of the Second New Town, an important area of early 19th-century Georgian architecture. The street is characterised by elegant sandstone elevations, traditional detailing and timber sash & case windows.
The project began with a detailed survey of the existing windows to assess their condition and identify which could be retained through refurbishment. This allowed us to take a targeted approach, combining replacement and restoration to preserve as much of the original windows as possible while improving the property’s overall performance.
Our team carried out a combination of six sash & case window replacements and two sash & case window refurbishments. The replacement windows were bespoke made to match the original windows ensuring the new installations remained sympathetic to the property’s Georgian character.
The two window refurbishments allowed existing windows that remained suitable for retention to be carefully restored, extending their serviceable life. This approach provided a balance between targeted replacement and conservation, rather than replacing every window unnecessarily.
The completed works improve the windows condition, comfort and performance while maintaining the traditional appearance of the building. The combination of bespoke replacement windows and sensitive refurbishment ensures the property’s historic character remains an integral part of the finished result.
This project demonstrates a considered approach to working on traditional Edinburgh properties, combining modern performance with skilled sash & case craftsmanship while respecting the architectural character of the city’s historic New Town.
